Scope for Savage model 24
What would be a good scope and mounts to use on a Savage model 24, 22 over 20 gauge. I would like to use this gun for squirrel hunting. Would an air rifle scope be the best choice to stand up to the abuse from the shotguns recoil and still have a rife type cross hair?

The problem is finding a scope mount that will fit.
The grooves on the top .22 barrel are so narrow that tip-off rings will not work.

Redfield made a special version of its tip-off type 1" rings for the Savage 24. Not made for a while now, but they didn't sell well, so there should still be some around. Try some of the old/used sight/scope mount guys, like Ken Bean of York, PA. 0 -

You can buy 1" rings that will work on a 3/8" grooved rail. Burris, Leupold & Weaver make them. There's no "cross bolt" as is found on centerfire rings, hopefully the little "teeth" cut into the clamping device holds the scope in place when using the shotgun barrel.
I think any good centerfire scope will work, hold up to the 20 gauge recoil. You might also take a look at shotgun scopes, some of them have simple reticles that can be used on a rifle. And the parallax on a shotgun scope tends to be set for 75 yds instead of the usual 100 yds for a rifle - that might be better since you're using a 22.
IIRC some shotgun scopes don't have "click" adjustments, which I suppose makes sense. Something to take into consideration, may or may not be an issue for the user.0 -
I have found that mounting a scope on a M24 is good only if you primarily shoot the rifle. The scope is a problem when shooting the shotgun- both from getting in the way of keeping your head down on the stock and following the bird with your eye; as well as the risk of having the scope hit your face. That said, I have a 3/4" tube Weaver 29S on a M24 22WMRF/410- but I shoot the 22 Mag almost exclusively. 0 -
I have not found any mounts that fit the Savage 24. However, it is easy to make them fit with a round file. Buy some inexpensive aluminum rings meant for the standard 22 grooved receiver and file the "arch" between the clamps until there is enough room to tighten the screws. Got this recommendation from someone on this site several months ago when I was trying to solve the problem. Be aware though, Savage engraves on the 22LR/20 Gauge 24s (mine anyway) instructions not to fire the shotgun with a scope mounted. 0 -

I have Holden Ironsighter high rise see thru mounts on my 223/20ga. Screwed to the rail.
