375 H&H reduced loads
planning on making some reduced loads for my ruger #1 and have some questions.
1. thinking about lead bullets in the 225 to 250 range. gas check or not? are 38-55 bullets ok for this?
2. would like to shoot between 2000 and 2300 fps. what type of powder would work? have h4895 available would this be doable?
3. if i have to buy powder what would be best?
4. are magnum primers a must?
5. did i use my quota of questions yet?

Two of my "go to" loads for fun shooting with the 375 were:
Speer 235 gr bullets backed up with 45gr of IMR4198. If you're using 4895, step it up to around 50 gr.
"Any" cast bullet with 18 to 24 gr of IMR 4759.
Standard primers will do just fine. (no penalty for mag.)0 -
The Lyman 49 Reloading Handbook list two gas checked bullets 375449 264 gr and 378674 335 gr. They load SR4759, XMP5744,IMR4198, and RX7.
They used WLRM primers. Their top loads were all less than 1900.0 -
"would like to shoot between 2000 and 2300 fps.'...........that's realy 'pushing' it for cast bullets, you'd need a very 'hard' bullet w/gas check or maybe a paper patched bullet. xxcross has it covered. 0 -
I have several loads up to 2000 FPS available when I shot cast in a 375 H&H. I will dig them out tomorrow for you.
The 265 Grain RCBS mold produced excellent accurate gas check bullets. IMO you need gas checks to obtain peak accuracy. The cartridge is a very effective deer gun using cast bullets. The reduced recoil is welcome and the thing still has the energy of Thor's hammer to drop big game.0 -

I've loaded some 375 H&H with the RCBS 250 grain mould, Lyman #2 metal, Hornady clip on gas checks, Fed 210 primer, 38 grs SR4759, Winchester brass. I don't know what the velocity is, but they have about the same trajectory as 170 gr bullets out of a 30-30, so they must be pretty close to 2000. This is out of a M70 with 24" barrel. 0 -
I just checked my notes. the RCBS 375-250 gas checked bullet loaded to a OAL of 3.490 using 24 grains of Blue Dot shot very well. 0 -
I load reduced loads in my 375 Ruger, which
is real close to the H & H. I use Rel 7 with the
lyman 264 gr cast bullet. I use 38 grains and
wlrm primers. On a good day, I can shoot groups
into 1 1/4 inch. On an average day groups of less
than 2 inches is normal. Velocity according to my
CHRONY averages at 1925 fps.0
