Buying and Receiving 30 rd mags from over seas.

Is it legal to purchase and receive magazines from overseas? I'm looking at 30 round magazines For the Thompson Sub Gun made during WW2.
Any help would be great! Thanx Larry

    The short answer is... not without an import permit from the United States Department of Defense. Starting at the end of Bush 43`s last term, Customs and Border Protection started zealously enforcing the US enacted International Treaty on Arms Trafficking (the ITAR), which calls out magazines, gun parts (interpreted by them to include gun stocks, also), ammunition and components, and a long list of other defense related items as needing an import or export permit from the 2 nations involved. For further details, contact Customs, or start your search at www.usexportcompliance.com as it will lead you to the right branch of US government to get done what you want to do. Be advised that the expense in getting registration and complying is very high. Most small businesses won't be able to afford it.

    My mistake. It is the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, not what I wrote earlier.

    Exports are subject to US Department of State regulations.

    Imports are subject to BATFE regulations. LCAFDs (Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices) can be imported, provided you have an approved Form 6 import permit.

    You will probably find it easier to buy what you need on the GunBroker auction site.

    There are sellers in country who offer these. Try Sarco, for one. I always preferred the 20's to the 30's because the 30's are really long, but that's just a personal choice.

    I have to say, I'm REALLY glad I talked to a Friend at work about this issue and he suggested you guys for advice, I was SSOOO close to sending the money for 6 30 rd mags. Thank you ALL for your Quick Response, and for keeping me out of a Federal penitentiary.

    It appears that enforcement is still spotty. I mailed my self a complete K98 stock from Norway and it arrived at my home in 10 days. I identified it as a wood rifle stock on the customs declaration form.
