The proper jig makes it easier to get straight holes on the proper spacing. I learned with a Forester.
There are perhaps some peep type sights that will work with the existing scope mount holes.
+1 for let a pro do it with the proper tools.0 -
For what it is worth, nevermind the reciever sight, and go with a Marbles, or a Lyman #2 tang sight. Your holes are already there.
If you do go with the reciever sight, follow the good advice, and take it to a full service gunsmith.

Williams makes peep sights that use the scope base holes.
We have one on my wife's 10/22 and had one on the Marlin 62.
You may need to install a higher front sight.0 -
Before you go drilling, do some research. There are receiver sights that mount on top of the receiver in the rear scope mount holes. You may have to install a taller front sight also. 0 -
My 1894s are D & T on the side, they're a few years older though. As mentioned there are other options for a peep rear. I would add that a globe front sight, Lyman 17 or Redfield for example, has always worked best for me. The Lyman is fairly small diameter and fits the barrel well, inserts are easy to fund and inexpensive (get steel, not plastic) and come in varying heights.
I plink at 100 yds with a 1894 Cowboy in 45 Colt and an 1894 in 25-20. With good sights and good eyes I'd say there's no difference in group size between those irons and a scope.0
