Metric (mm) designation of US cartridges

Anyone have or know of a cross-reference chart?

For example, was there a metric (European) name for the old .38-55?

    Cartridges of the World is a good reference. The 22 Savage Hi Power is a 5.6x52R.

    Cartridges Of the world does not list cartridges buy BOTH metric and English size On each item it is mostly one or the other. It does list size down to one thousand of an inch

    The only crossbreed inch-metric designations are for those US calibers actually in use in Europe.
    6.35x52R = .25-35 WCF was a fairly popular light hunting rifle round overseas.
    Never heard of a foreign name for .38-55, they shot the ballistic equivalent but dimensionally different 9.3x72R.

    The link leads to the C.I.P. (European) specs. It contains the equivalent to SAAMI specs. Has drawings of cartridges and chambers, etc.

    The link does not work because of this site's goofy auto censor. In that link you will have to edit the word "samelogation" and replace "same" with the letters I will spell out phonetically. You'll see why the censor changed them: aitch oh emm oh
    Then the link takes you to a European directory of cartridges. [:D]

    Where US and British cartridges retain their inch designations, not some faked up metrication. For example, they do NOT list the .30-06 as 7.62x63 as some would have us do.

    for a rough estimate, multiply the metric by four. example 7mm would be 28 caliber, 9mm - 36 cal. it may not be perfect but will get you close.

    Hi,

    The below are good references for converting from metric to approximate US although it will not be complete due to the oddities that occur. For example a 38 Special is really 0.358 inches; therefore, the metric will differ from the common cartridge name.

    The next reference is a website and is very complete, but it is in Spanish. Use www.babelfish.com to translate to English if needed, but the site can be navigated without knowing Spanish.
