I was wanting to know about the vulcan 50 bmg's does any one have one and how good are they? I know a barrett, armalite or mcmillian would be the best. this wouldn't be shot on a daily basis, maybe something for the weekends. Are they accurate? and very dependable, just looking for the pro's and con's

I have never even seen cast .50 BMG ammo let alone used it. Seems to me it would lead the hell out of your gun when pushed at normal velocities for that round.

If shooting cast in a semi auto like the Barrett or a belt fed like the MA Deuce you would likely get feeding problems since those guns are designed to use fully jacketed bullets.

At least in 30-06 caliber it is widely accepted that AP ammo shoots tighter groups than ball ammo. If that would apply to .50 cal, I am not sure.

The specs for the 50 cal. BMG were the loosest set for military ammo, the idea was to increase the random probable hits when engaging aircraft.

As far as 30-06 some lots shoot way better than others. I shot away 5 gallon buckets of collet pulled bullets. The poorest groups were from burnt out tracers but even those were good enough for picket pens to a 100 yards or so.

Shot lots of 5010 recovered from 50's in the 30-06. Never saw anyone try cast bullets in a 50 BMG.

There are no secrets about this process as it's just like shooting cast bullets out of any other firearm. The velocity target is slower and you need a good recipe for lube. Just like any other process, accuracy can be awful up to superb. The magic is in the recipe.

The most accurate bullet I've seen is the 975 gr. from CBE. Lighter bullets, not so much but there was less testing. 2100 FPS seems like a good goal but you can get 2400-2500 without leading when a great lube is used...

    Best.

Lefty - Do you have documented proof of that, or, is it your opinion?

    Just askin'.

Its not opinion. I have seen it numerous times in print and on the internet over the years by people who have compared the two rounds. They have found that military 30-06 AP shot tighter groups than military 30-06 ball ammo. Notice I said "ball" and not "match" ammo.
