oddball 257
I've run across in Eddystone rifle we barreled 257. But here's the odd part it's a 257 x 72. not having a lot of lot finding any information about this cartridge I know it's a wildcat but I haven't the slightest idea what the parent cases HELP please.

9.3x72R Was loaded by Sellier andBellot, it is a mild old Euro round.....maybe that is the parent case? 0 -
The sure way is a chamber cast. If it's rimmed maybe a 9.3 by 72R, belted maybe a 300 H&H. It's not listed in P.O. Ackley books vol. 1 or 2.

72mm is 2.836" which is awful close to the 2.85" of a H&H Magnum case.
It would seem difficult to get the skinny 9.3x72R case into a big bolt action and end up with a big bulky gun in a low powered caliber.
But a chamber cast will tell the tale.0 -
If I were to guess, I'd go with .257/300 H&H. Check the bolt face and see if it's been opened to .532". 0 -
I'm not a military guy..... Could the Eddystone have come with a boltface for .303 British? If so, this large rimmed boltface may be just right for the rimmed 72mm case, the 7x72R, 8x72R and 9.3x72R family. All of these cases are basically all taper, no shoulder is discernible. Can you see a shoulder in the chamber?? 0 -

I just bought the thing to an auction and I have an accident my hands on a just yet. The first thing I was going to do was to get a chamber cast and check out the boldfaced to get a clue as to what is. It sounds really interesting though what the Eddystone depending on the serial numbers it may have a problem is first pressure goes. Some of them are rather brittle from what I understand.
Always been a big fan of the 257 Ackley improved an event real good luck with them all away up to and including elk.
My main thought was leaning towards the 300 H&H case but I didn't think about those other metric cases. As soon as I get it and figure out what it is argued back to everybody.

I had a similar action rebarrelled to 257 WBY. It blew up and nearly killed me-use care and have it magnafluxed. 0 -

Well Guys barreled action came in today and I haven't done the chamber cast yet but looking at the boldface I believe you hit it on the head with a 9.3 x 73R. I did find a little bit more information in the this was an estate auction and the guy was an old time gunsmith and it shows on the set up. He is a 30 inch barrel that weighs a ton. mounted target blocks set up on the receiver and even though it's a standard trigger it's obviously been tuned and smooth out.
I'm in Oregon right now and were in the process of moving to Wyoming. Got tired of my shop flooding in the political climate in Oregon sucks. When I get settled and have a chance to finish this thing up our report back hopefully it will live up to the potential.
