S&W 686 .38Specisl

Just got a 686 6" marked .38 Special +P on the Barrel. Also Round Butt. Was this a special run? Anyone got any info? "Thanks"

  You need to give us the information on the frame (inside the crane); i.e., the revision number. Plus, the serial number might help.

  EDIT: While the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is certainly comprehensive, there are some special editions that have not previously been identified. This is one of the few cases where a factory letter for a modern gun may be worth the cost (assuming you don't have the original box with end label, which would be even better). While that won't make it valuable, it will certainly increase the value.

  I've gone through the "Product Codes and Features by Year", for the 686, in the Smith & Wesson book. Only one .38 Special, I could find. It was listed as being made in 1988 with a 4" barrel, as "Special Production".

  I found a listing for M686 .38 Special 4" but not 6".
  I don't know if that makes it rare and valuable, but it is not a usual combination.

  I think they made a run of them for a police department if I am not mistaken.
