380 Back Up Question
So I carry a P380...which round should I pack in it. Double Tap 80 gr TAC-XP or the 90 gr bonded HP? I am leaning toward the 90 gr HP 10 more grs of weight and 1000 fps out of a 2.5 in barrel vs 1050 fps for the 80 gr out of a 2.5 inch barrel.

The one that functions better, that you can get and afford to stay in top form with. How well do they work against a gallon milk jug full of water at 10 yards? 0 -
First thing you have to do is to make sure the cartridge is reliable. Do a series of live fire tests with the all ammo, you're thinking about using. Make sure that function is OK with both magazines.
That said I'm partial to the Hornady Critical Defense ammo. It doesn't have a large hollow point, but a tapered nose plugged with plastic. This bullet design with the tapered nose feeds very well through my guns. Much more reliably than the ones with the large hollow points.
If your pistol has no problem feeding H-P's? You might consider the Speer Gold Dot's.
Go on U Tube, there are a number of guys who have done penetration and expansion tests. Using denim covered ballistic gelatin blocks. They give good indication what the ammo will do in personal protection situations.0 -

the lighter bullet will give you a bit more velosity but the heavier bullet will give you more knock down power, reliability is a must on a carry piece so manufacturer is very important too. 0 -
Consider frangible ammo, such as from Liberty, E-shock, Magsafe, or Glaser. It will penetrate about 2 inches, then blow up into small, light fragments that cause more damage than an intact bullet. Because the fragments are very light, they don't have much mass or further penetration, so there is far less risk of over penetration. Consider if you had to shoot a bad guy at a shopping mall. The risk to the soccer mom behind the bad guy is minimal.
Magsafe is ranked number one one in the Strasbourg lethality test: it had a higher stopping rate in .380 auto than any hollow point load in .45 auto. Also, most of these rounds have a "ball" profile for excellent feeding. The only problem is that they are very high pressure rounds. A Sig can handle it, but a Keltec cannot handle Magsafe.

In my opinion, frangible ammo hasn't caught on in the past 40 years because of closed minded thinking. Test the ammo, especially for reliability. You decide for yourself.0
