Slugs out of smoothbore

Thanks for all the info guys. You guys are great.

I just got a Stoeger M2000 in a "tactical" set up. Cylinder choke nonadjustable. The manual says that lead or steel shot are ok to shoot through it. What I would like to know, is why they did not list slugs as "approved" ammo. Do you guys know why they wouldn't list slugs as "approved" ammo?

  There is such a wide variety of 'slug' ammunition that it would be a little fool-hardy of them to make a recommendation. Slugs perform better when they are tested in a particular shotgun and choke combination. They are not as generic as shot shells in gauges.

  My late model issue of Gun Digest has Stgr m2000 barrels out there w/ choked barrels in c, i, m, f, xf chokes.
  
  As for slugs w/your gun, slugs with-out sabots should do.Your quary should be with-in a shootable 100yd for them.
  
  I've a 'new' Rem 870 Express Magnum w/a smooth bore and an auction side win of an extended rifled choke for it.
  
  I got 12in 5 shot groups w/slugs off hand no rest/bags last summer and saw no game during shooting hours to use him.

  As no nonsense stated, the Foster slugs we all are familiar with work through a smoothbore, some better than others accuracy-wise. More modern sabot slugs will fire, but shoot very poorly, because they use rifling in the bore to stabilize.

  ..I used a smoothbore Sears 200 (Win. 1200) all my years of deer hunting. Winchester Foster type or Brenneke slugs both shot very well through it. 3-4" at 50 yards was good enough. I'd cut the barrel back with a bandsaw, so no choke.
  
  ..I cut an 1100 down for my wife and used an extended rifled tube on the end. It wasn't enough to stabilize sabot slugs. It had a slight edge over the smoothbore with Foster types.

  I run the cast Lyman sabot slugs in 20 inch smooth bore 870 Express with a choke tube marked skeet#2. With the aid of a small mid-bead I could keep a 3# coffee can dead/worried at 90 yards. Not to bad for a pistol gripped shotgun.

  Check out the Brenneke slugs. Most guns will shoot them very accurately smoothbore or rifled.

  Your Stoeger with cylinder choke will shoot slugs just fine. I suspect the reason they did not list slugs as "approved" is it's generally accepted that slugs can be fired from any barrel with a modified or looser choke.

  I use the cheap Remington Slugger out of my 870 20" cyl bore. I was surprised at how well they shot. they start to hurt after awhile though.

  my ghost ring sighted benelli (smoothbore) is surprisingly accurate with slugs, esp brenneke
  
  palm sized groups at 50yds are so
