"The NRA Guide to Firearms Assembly, ( Rifles & Shotguns )". Has a section on the Savage Model 24, with a schematic. Showing all the parts.

The part that holds the barrels closed, is called the "locking bolt assembly". If you have removed the lever that opens the barrels with all it's associated parts? The only other part retaining the "locking bolt assembly", is a traverse pin through the receiver. It is located approximately half way between the bottom of the receiver, and the hammer.

Use a packing hook to pull back on part #45. Pull hard on forearm it should come off with barrels closed. Look at screw #53 and cam #52.

You might want to check the firing pins to make sure they aren't wedged forward essentially locking the breach.

Thanks for the help guys. turns out the inner trigger guard screw came out and lodged itself under the release mechanism. Had to tear it all down and that main spring was a tuffy but made a tool and got her done !!
