I come accross this old gun ive had for years, forgot i even had it. the gun is a 38 S&W doesnt have a model no. that ive seen. it says made in USA on the frame but says England on the cyl. the serial matches on cyl. and gun. whats up with that? Serial no is V174xxx.
barrel marking says 38 s&w ctg. Any one no what Model this is, or anything about it? Worth anything? I dont have a real good camera, but its in fair shape.

Your picture is so small it's hard to tell, but it might be a S&W victory model that someone had nickel or hard chromed and put those grips on. There should be some English proof marks on the barrel.
All those were 38-200 caliber, worth in that condition, maybe $15-200.0 -
JW- BIG pictures, lotsa pixels, in focus, well lighted, showing the marks. S&W did not use model numbers before WW 2. Include the serial number- if it WAS a Victory model, those started with a V. 0 -
Your S & W was a standard Military & Police model, that was sent to England during World War II. They were used by the British commonwealth forces during the war. The finish was a mat blue, and it was chambered for the standard British military cartridge, 38/200. Similar to our 38 S & W, but with a heavier bullet. Here is a photo of a original one I got off the net. This is what yours looked like, before it was bubbaed.
After the war they were exported back to the US and sold as surplus, very inexpensively. First one I bought back in the 70's, set me back all of $30.00, including tax. Some bubba has got his hands on yours, had it plated and changed out the original grips. If he hadn't done this,and left it original, it probably would be worth between $300 & $400, maybe more? nowadays. In the condition it's in now, unfortunately, $75-$200?0 -
Thanks for the info. Is it alright to shoot a standard .38 round in it?

The rounds are not interchangeable. IF a 38 special will fit in the cylinder, find a gunsmith because someone has reamed out the cylinder. Not worth a chance of being injured or causing damage to the revolver. 0 -
These were made in .38 S&W, and later in .38 S&W Special. What is marked on the barrel? Those are two different cartridges. 0
