Stevens "trigger release" shotgun
I have a friend who has picked up a Stevens "choke bored" 12 ga single barrel that he tells me is an old model 100 and uses the trigger for a release. I have never seen one! Any info would be appreciated. DOM, parts, number made??

If you opt to replace the trigger entirely, that leaves you with two alternatives: mechanical triggers or release triggers.
With a mechanical trigger, both hammers are cocked when you break open the shotgun. By eliminating the inertia factor, the second barrel will fire when the first barrel fails to fire.
Then there are release triggers. They sound counter-intuitive, but shooters who use them can't go back. Think of a release trigger as drawing back the string on a bow. To fire the arrow you simply release the string. It's similar with a release trigger.
To set the trigger you pull on it as though to fire it. But the trigger won't fire until you take your finger off it. Release triggers were originally designed for single-shot trap guns -- the idea behind it that you were less likely to flinch on targets that generally flew straight out.
Over time, release triggers migrated to skeet and sporting shotguns. And the technology has grown more sophisticated. You can now either order, or have customized, just about any configuration of a release trigger.
You can have release-pull, release-release, pull-release -- pretty much whatever your heart desires.
Look for the Big R on the Shotgun
They are a aftermarket part that trap shooters used to help with flinching [;)]0 -
I believe this refers to a 2nd 'trigger' that breaks open the shotgun, not a 'release trigger'. 0 -
Stevens did make a single barrel shotgun with a trigger release to break open the gun.
It is a very unusual and I think dangerous gun.
There is only one trigger and no exposed hammer so one does not know the status of the chamber,loaded or unloaded.
I have one somewhere with a bad stock and will get to fix it someday.
I am on vacation otherwise I would reference the best book on old Stevens that provides details on the gun.
My guess re value in good condition would be around $100

This seems to be the firearm in question. If you could forward reference info after vacation, I would appreciate the effort. This Stevens would be unsafe due to the fact that you can not tell if the gun is loaded or not. Still, very interesting!

The info on the gun is in the book on Stevens /Savage by Bill West.
The gun is a model 170/165 or 160 depending on the ejector and checkering. Introduced in 1903 and removed in 1907.
Mine has a very small hammer and with the hammer down if you pull the trigger it opens the gun(weird) Made in all common gauges.
