Remington 788 Scope Base
I have a Remington 788 in 7-08 and just picked up another in 222 Remington. In looking for a one piece scope base (turn in, not Weaver) I see scope bases from the usual companies and they are listed as "Long Action" and even "Extra Long Action" which makes me suppose, like the 700, if there's long there's also short. I've been shooting various 788s for years, neveer paid too much attention - aren't they offered in one action length only?
If more than one length which one is used for the 222 Remington? I'd assume short, but perhaps that's used for the 44 Magnum only?

The 44 magnum is Short Action
22 Centerfires are Long Action. So is the 30/30.
Calibers .243,6mm, 7mm-08 .308 are Extra Long Action
I'm about 98% sure this is correct. You would need a base for a Long Action for your 22 centerfire.0 -
Twalker nails it. You will need a extra long action mount for the 7/08
gun. By the way ALL left hand 788's are also extra-long actions. The .222 mag is a long action mount. look here...

Thanks all. I did more checking too, ordered a Weaver "long action" base from SWFA, their site lists cartridges with action length and although not specifically listed I figured the 222 would be the same as the 222 RM. I really hadn't thought much about it, have scoped a few over the years and must have gotten lucky. 0 -
OK, I'm going to weigh in here, too. I have several 788's and just spent some time measuring (took me quite a while to locate my .44). I used a carpenter's rule so I may be off .020" or so. The .308 & 6mm have a receiver length of 6 9/16"; the .30/30, .222, & .22/.250 are 6 5/16"; the .44 is 5 5/8". These measurements were taken across the top of the receivers and do not include the tang. There are 3 scope mounting holes (8-40) in the receivers: the .308 holes are 4 3/16" c/c back to front, and the .222 and .30/30 are 3 7/8" c/c back to front. The rimmed cartridge bolts have considerably different bolt face and ejectors from the rimless ones and are 2-piece. The .44 bolt is 7/16" shorter than the .30/30. So, if scope bases are called short, long, and extra-long, your .222 needs a long base (with 3 7/8" hole spacing).
My .30/30, .308, 6mm, and .222 have one-piece Redfield bases on them. The bases have a bevel over the ejection port to deflect the cases from hitting the scope.
After noting the variations of the 788, it would have been a production and inventory nightmare for Remington. No wonder they discontinued them!0 -
Remington never made the 788 in caliber 222 Magnum. This is an error in some of the charts. It should have read .222 0 -

I have the 788 in .223 Rem. It took the one piece base for the long action. The Rem 788 is a real shooter, really like the rifle. 0
