Have someone check the vehicle with a scanner which will tell you why the warning light came on plus it will go off. Think most places will do this free.

Check engine light could be low oil. Service engine soon has to do with emissions. I would check all fluids.

Common on these to have an exhaust leak, either manifold gasket or EGR tube. This will cause the light. Like was mentioned, have it scanned.

That would be the service engine soon light. I have two Exploaders and went through emissions hell with a 2002.

The best piece of advice I can give you is this... go buy something other than a FORD!

Check engine could be a misfiring spark plug, worn spark plug wire, or something as simple as a loose gas cap.

Most service places will scan the code for free.

I bought a fairly decent one for less than $100.

Everything about Ford Explorers can be found at "SeriousExplorations.com. It's a great site for trouble shooting the Explorer.
