Winchester identification
I'm looking at picking up a Winchester which I believe to be a model 1892. Problem is, it doesn't say Model 1892 in the regular spot (on the tang) or anywhere else for that matter.
The tang has: "Reg. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. -WINCHESTER- -TRADE MARK-" stamped on it.
On the barrel: top line reads "manufactured by the winchester repeating arms co." 2nd line: "New haven.conn.u.s.a. Patented october 14. 1884". There are 2 stampings on top. One on frame where barrel goes in, one on top of barrel by frame. There is also 2 stampings on underside of frame by each side if locking lugs. Hard to make out, but it looks like one is "CB" and one is "31"?? Hard to make out. The serial number (on the bottom of the receiver in the normal spot) is 480XXX.
Any insight to what is going on here? The barrel has been shortened by two inches (magazine tube extends further than the barrel). I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

My friend Michael is trying to get registered on the GB forums so that he can discuss this Model 1892 with you. In the meantime, he has asked what the complete (full) serial number is. With it, we can determine exactly when this Model 1892 was manufactured. 0 -

Since this tread is about to be locked, I'll try to sneak in a response. Michael is surveying Model 92/1892's, so he has seen a number of rifles so marked and I have one that is similar. Your Model 1892 is in a serial number range of rifles that either had no model designation or were marked with the model designation right below the hammer, not on the tang. Rifles so marked will be marked from left to right, just below the hammer slot:

From what I understand from Michael's survey, at one point about 50% of the rifles he'd surveyed with that particular tang marking didn't have the model designation behind the hammer like mine does.
