Ruger 22 Pistol failure to chamber
My Ruger 22 pistol that I purchased new in the early 70's has lately been failing to completely get the round in the chamber on about 1 round per magazine (it gets 1/3 of the way in the chamber). I ran 3 magazines of rounds thru manually yesterday and they all functioned fine. I have been lightly forcing the bolt to close when problem occurs they eject fine. Any ideas what this might be?
The pistol has around 15,000 rounds thru it and I field stripped it clean about 500 rounds ago.
The problem has only occurred since I started shooting Remington's, so I am suspicious of the ammo, but can't find any other to purchase.
The failure is never the 1st or last in the magazine.

Field strip it again and clean the chamber real good [;)] You probably have a lube build up of the outside lubed ammo [^] 0 -
Crappy bulked packed ammo gets my vote. CCI minimags will sing threw most of my 22's.
Use a hand lens and inspect the edge of the chamber and the lips on magazines. Spring tension could becoming an issue.
The other day Sportsman warehouse had ammo. $24 for 525 bulked packed Remington.0 -
I'd use J-B Bore Paste to clean the chamber; it is a mild abrasive.

I agree about the ammo. Give CCI Mini Mag solids a try, if you can get your hands on some.
Seems time to replace the recoil spring also, after 15,000 rounds. Been many moons since I last worked on a Rugers innards. I believe the recoil spring is mounted on a steel rod. But don't recall if it's a assembly or separate parts? If it's assembly replace the whole unit, with a new one.

When I conducted live fire as part of Hunter Education I used a Ruger MkI and whatever 22 ammo was on sale (to keep the price of the course to a minimum & the object was shooting, not the score). The classes went about 25 and each student shot 5-10 rounds. By the end of the second class the cartridges would start sticking, just short of being chambered. One solution would be to get a slightly stronger bolt return spring, but I've found that a good soak in Hoppes followed by a brush and patch resolved the problem. 0 -
Use 25 caliber brush on JUST the Chamber . it will be too tight to go down the bore or use a wet bore mop in Kroil let chamber stay wet with the Kroil at least 12 hours a normal 22 brush will not even touch the chamber walls.[V] 0 -
could also have a small burr on the chamber mouth from dry fire. 0 -
My Ruger Standard auto from the '60's hates Remington ammo and does the same unless squeaky clean. Change to CCI. Also when loading the mag don't hold the follower button down and drop all the cartridges in. Pull it down, insert cartridge, let it go up and repeat for others. I found when I would just hold it down and drop rounds in and on last one in let it go that I would get failures. 0 -

I have a 27 year old Ruger MKII that has well over 50,000 rounds through it. The only time it has ever failed to feed,fire, or eject
has been with cheap bulk ammo, especially Federals.
Winchester SuperX, CCI Mini-mags, CCI Stingers have never been a problem.0 -
Thanks, I'll try some JB bore paste I've got and hope to eventually find some other brand of 22's for sale 0
