22 Colt conversion

I was lucky enough to find an original Colt 22 conversion setfor my 1911 45, it shoots well but every so often when the spent shell ejects the hammer fails to cock,so I manually cock it. Can this be a to strong or to weak spring? Any help is appreciated.

  I'd be looking at the: hammer, sear, sear spring, recoil spring and the disconnector.

  First thing that has to be ascertained, is if this only happens when you are using the conversion unit? If so, it has to be a problem with one of the components of the conversion unit.
  
  I've owned a number of them over the years. Because of the floating chamber they are very fussy ammo wise. The inexpensive, promotional type, bulk ammo will foul the chamber causing problems. Since I started using CCI Stingers in mine. Function was nearly 100%, with excellent accuracy.

  mine works too well ..works with out the ejector 100%[:0]

  Most likely the Floating chamber needs a Good Cleaning. This is what gives the slide a Full cycle.
  
  
  
  
  EDIT The Pistol can be spotless clean However IF THE FLOATING CHAMBER IN THE CONVERSION UNIT BARREL HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BARREL AND BOTH THE FLOATING CHAMBER AND THE PART OF THE BARREL THAT THE FLOATING CHAMBER FITS IN IS ALSO CLEANED THEN YOU HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM.

  The pistol is cleaned and still happens but not with 45 ammo.I think the easiest thing to check is ammo I'll try CCI this week. thanks for the replies, you guys are always a big help

  The Floating Chamber is designed so that the weak .22 rimfire cartridge can operate the heavy slide. It appears that the Floating Chamber may be dirty so as to impede its "push" on the slide.
  
  It is also possible that someone mixed up the recoil spring with one too strong, which would also impede the full recoil of the slide.
  
  The last thing to do is to consider the ammunition. Some .22 rimfire ammunition is too weak to operate the slide. Use high speed ammunition. To see if it will help, try some "hyper" ammunition. If the hammer always re-cocks with "hyper" ammunition, look at the recoil spring as possibly being too heavy. (Wolff sells proper recoil springs for Conversion Units.)
  
  Let us know what works to solve the problem.
