Acoustic Sensors Pinpoint Gunfire !
How big of a game changer is this going to be in a conventional warfare scenario? Snipers are going to need silencers and how does that effect accuracy? The technological advances on the battlefield are going to make it a lot harder to stay safe and undetected!

Silencers won't matter, from what i've read about two different acoustic systems the rounds would also have to be subsonic to defeat them.
Don't think 1000 yard+ shots are feasible with subsonic ammo, would say impossible but somebody on here would claim to have done it.0 -
I agree with BGHillbilly, Anyone who has worked in the pits on a KD range knows how loud the crack is when a .30 bullet goes overhead. That is true even at 600 yards. Perhaps a silencer would make it difficult to course the sound to it's source. A hipower rifle silencer would have to be pretty large and cumbersome. I didn't read the article but know that technology to trace a mortar or artillery round back to the location it was fired from has been around for a while. I don't think it would be feasible to have enough of the units to trace individual rifle bullets. With electronic items getting smaller and cheaper, who knows? 0 -
Actually, this week I was reading about a smart phone app that does this. 3 or more phones, linked, picks up the Krack-Thump, triangulates, gives distance to shooter, displays as a map graphic on the phone with big red arrow pointing to shooter. 0 -

But, in a combat situation, the phones won't be able to keep up and a basic denial of service attack happens.
This technology has been in use in urban areas for a while though... and for anti-sniper use it may work... of course, the first shot should be just about the only shot... and, it wouldn't be too hard to make small radio controlled devices that would create false reports... enough of those and either the selected point won't be the right one, or again the technology wouldn't keep up quick enough.0 -

This is probable the only defense against acoustic sensors in print for Now! But I think DARPA should be working on a better solution like a rail magnetic sniper rifle with a bubble wave in water running a wet silencer. These elite snipers are not going to be Sherman tank personnel like in WWII!

Along with a suppressor's internal hardware, another sound-reducing option is the practice of running a suppressor "wet." Earlier this year, I meet with Brooks Van Camerik of Thompson Machine to discuss what wet versus dry suppression is all about. The process of wetting a suppressor involves adding a sound dampening liquid to the suppressor's baffle stack to improve its noise-reducing capabilities.
The liquid works to slow and cool hot gases before they exit into the atmosphere. Common wetting compounds include gun lubricants, silicone gel and ordinary tap water. Brooks clarified that while all modern suppressors can be wetted, dedicated wet suppressors rely on the presence of liquid in the baffles to work properly. The advantage of dedicated wet suppressors, like the units provided by Thompson machine, is that they are smaller, lighter and more maneuverable than their dry counterparts.0 -

Sound suppressors, usually, as a general rule, ENHANCE accuracy. However, one must take into consideration, that rounds that launch a bullet that is traveling at two, or three times the speed of sound, are going to have a boom and a crack. The suppressor will take care of most of the boom, but the crack will neveer go away...untill that velocity gets under 1050 FPS, give or take 50 FPS.
Those systems of which you talk about, are being employed in large citys, to help locate gang warfare gunfire.

OK, so a wet suppressor has to be wet to work...It is lighter than the dry suppressor, until you wet it down. I might not want to have one of these in the desert with me. I would imagine, wet also, means messier to clean...but I bet your salesman, did not offer that to you.

Oh, and yes, it does not what the object is, rather a bullet from a firearm, a projectile from a "MAGNETIC RAIL GUN", or a School Bus fired from a catupalt, if it is going over the speed of sound it is going to make a crack

The MPQ10 was a device for tracking mortar rounds dating from the '50s.
It generated a parabola from a couple of radar points in space. Sounds good but it didn't work.0
