7.62X51 Blank Brass
I have some 7.62X51 blank brass. I don't believe it can be used again for that caliber but I was told it can still be modified to another caliber. I was just going to take it to the scrap yard but with all the shortages figured I should check to see if it is still useful. Can this brass be modified and used again?

It depends on the manufacturer and year of the brass. 7.62mm NATO (U.S.) or 7.62x51 (foreign) ?? Also, is it the long neck or short neck??

US Government surplus 7.62X51. I don't know the difference between short neck or long neck but the neck, after the blank part is removed, is shorter than the regular brass. 0 -
US blanks are 7.62mm NATO, M82. The long neck has a double-step. OAL is about 2.6" It's hard to miss them because of their appearance.
Unlike the short blanks which can be made of reject cases, the M82 was made as an original case so should be OK for re-loading. It is a PITA to expand the neck to full diameter, which is necessary to keep it full length. It can be done with an expanding mandrel or you can simply use the short case if you don't want to go through the extra trouble.

You could chamber a gun for, and then load, the .308 x1.5" Barnes round with these cases. It was developed in the early 1960's by the Cartridges of the World author Frank C. Barnes. (Page 204 in the 11th edition) 0 -
Cut them down and make 45 Win Mag brass, or 45acp. 0 -
You probably cannot make either of those pistol cases from 7.62mm NATO brass without reaming the neck. The average case wall thickness of the NATO case at that point is .022".

Thank you all for the information. The ammo shortage seems to be getting worse and I do not want to waste any shooting sports resources. I have listed some and will use the information for the listing. If someone wants it then they have the opportunity. If no bidders then off to the scrap yard. I also have the regular 7.62X51 brass, LC, listed. If anyone that responded to this post bids on some please remind me that you responded to this post. 0 -
I bought a few cans of Israeli 7.62 blanks a few years back. All you have to do to them is pull the wooden bullet, dump out the flash powder, and reload with IMR and put a projectile on it.
There's a lot to be said for keeping things simple.[8D]0 -
It's worth repeating - standard length blank cartridges (including those loaded with wood bullets), are often made using reject or fired cases. The long-neck M82, OTOH, is made with a new case drawn specifically for that purpose. I'm not suggesting that any of the blank cartridge cases are not safe to use for full power loads, I'm only saying that it's important to know of their origin before doing so.
