Remington 673

Has Remington dropped the Model 673? I was looking at one of their catalogs the other day and there was no Model 673.

    I know this model didn't last very long. Anyone have an opinion on it?

    The Model 7, is not the exact same as a 700 Short action. You might want to check the fit charts of the various mounting hardware manufacturers. If I am not mistaken, there are only one piece bases available for the Model 7. If there are two piece options, I would go for a steel weaver style base, as there are various rings available. Not that the turn in's are not sufficient, but as of the last couple years, I have been using higher end 1913 bases, rings, and optics...it has paid off in accuracy, and not having to lap rings.

    Brownells lists bases specifically for the Remington 7, separate from the Rem 700 SA so I'd presume there's a difference. IIRC the 7 is the rifle version of the XP-100, I see my XP base has 3 screw holes while the 7 carries 4.

    Pacific Tool & Gauge also separately lists their non-ISS firing pin assembly for the 7, so I'd presume there's a difference.

    The 7, is a cross, between the 700SA, and the 600/660(which was based off the XP-100). I have one of the few Model 7FS models, which have a Brown Precision fiber glass/Kevlar overlay stock, and an 18 1/2 inch barrel. Mine is in 308 Winchester, and weighs in at 6 pounds, two ounces, with 5 rounds, and a Leupold compact 3-9x scope. It was made in 1987.

    How your XP-100 R came about, was there were some out of spec 7 receivers, made unintentionally at Remington. The rear bridge of the receiver was cut 0.020"-0.025" lower than spec. They turned them into the XP-100R. When the receiver's were used up, the Model XP-100R, was dropped. I sold several of those XP=100 R's, in 350 Mag. You have to shim under the rear of the base, or you will torque(read as spring) the base. The Model 7 receiver should be correct, as should be the 673 you have.

    Thanks for the background info. Lately I've been getting into "other than 700" Remingtons and have picked up a few 660s and 788s. I had the chance a few years back to pick up a FS Model 7 at a very good price but passed because I didn't know what I was looking at. I'll eventually get one, have a soft spot for the F/S stocks.
