rock river forward rail help???

my son has a rock river ar-15 and he want to replace the forward rail and handguard with a lighter unit. we took it today to an "AR-15 specialist" to get the rail removed. guy could not get the spanner nut to turn. he suggested using a torch to heat it, i said no. what is the proper way to get this loose and what direction does it turn?
