how do i take the barrel off a p17 is it the same as a mauser

Short answer, yes. However, I have read that 1917 barrels are fitted very tight. It is suspected that cracked receivers sometimes resulted when the armories rebarreled 1917 Enfields. I would consult a good gunsmithing book that covers this before starting.

There is a way the a gun smith relives the pressure on the barrel and receiver threads so the cracks do not accrue. I read this in a good artical on line that is full of information on the rifle but no gun smithing tip on the reliveing. Try the CMP site bolt action section there are a lot of guys into Milsurp bolt rifles and CMP also sells barrels for them.

I've removed a bunch of these, cut a grove in the barrel about 1/16" ahead of the reciever (about 1/8" deep) then remove like you would a mauser. thread is 10 per inch square thread.
