LC Smith question
My son brought home a shotgun last night for me to check out. It is what I think an early 12 gauge LC Smith SN# 37225. All of the serial numbers that I found agree. The stock is fully figured walnut and the forearm has an insert in about the center of a dog's head. The end of the forearm is finished with a darker almost black inlay of wood. The barrels appear to be Damascus or at least looks that way. Under the forearm the pattern on the barrels is easy to see. Other areas of the barrel it's not real easy to make out the pattern. The inside of the barrels are bright with no pitting. I test fired both barrels using snap caps. All seems well. I assume the shotgun would have 2 9/16" chambers although a 2 3/4" shell drops into each chamber. I need to get a dowel to get a better measurement. One barrel is a full choke , the other is modified from what I can tell. There is a small amount of engraving on the side locks, trigger guard and receiver. Can someone tell me the approximate date of manufacture? Did I provide enough information to guess at the grade of this old girl? Any ballpark idea of what this might be worth. Thanks
EDIT: Thanks for the help/suggestions, are you referring to marked as in grade, DOM or ? I can send pictures to an e-mail address but I don't know how to do it through the forum. I did not see a grade mark on the shotgun anywhere but don't know exactly where to look.
EDIT 2 Thanks everyone. Yes,it is an extractor gun. I am surprised to hear it maybe a 2 3/4" chamber and not the shorter chamber given its age but that is great news. There is a "D" on each barrel near the chamber end of the barrel. No other marks on the barrels or and nothing near the serial number on the water table.

As always, good clear photos are worth at least several hundred words. I have not seen a bunch, but all the Elsies I have seen were so marked. 0 -

From the serial number it appears to be of 1893 vintage, would have 2-3/4" chambers, and, from your description of the forend, an extractor gun. If you'll look closely at the flats and water table you should see a number near the serial number---that is the grade.
Go to the LC site and click on Guns, then pre-13 guns, then match yours with the pics shown.

I recently sold one on GunBroker which was not as nice cosmetically as the one you describe, barrels shortened. crack in stock etc. but complete. Buyer wanted it to complete a restoration on one he already had. It brought a little over $200. I would think yours would bring a hundred or so more. Hope this helps. 0
