Bushy Flat Top with front site post
My nephew brought a flat top upper to me that had a front site post @ gas block. I don't know where he got it, so it is possible that someone just put any upper on a Bushmaster lower.
His problem is that he bought a low mount 4x scope (that sits on the flat top very well)....unfortunately the front site post blocks his vision. A riser on the scope would actually help his cheek weld, but it would have to be higher than he wants.
(My DPMS has flat - flat and my low scope has no obstruction)
He did not like my suggestion, what would you suggest ?

Yes, there are makers that put out a flat top gun with the traditional triangle ramp front sight. Why anyone does this in this day and age of AR-15 optics and good folding sights is beyond me, but they do. (Edit, I just checked, and yes, Bushmaster does offer guns like this).
There are a lot of ways to skin this cat.
One is just to take the gun back to whereever he got it from and then get one in the configuration he likes. [Edit maybe not so practical during today's Obama gun panic. He can also wait it out and buy another upper, or trade out his upper).
Another is to put the damn riser on then get used to it, but I can see why he might not like this option.
If he really likes a low-mount sight, what he should do is take off the triangle front sight/gas block and replace it with a low-profile one (possibly one with a built in piece of rail, in case he later want to mount a folding sight there).
That's probably the "best" solution, and it shouldn't cost too much for a gunsmith to do it for him.
Note that with a little bit of care, its possible to just hacksaw off the sight triangle, touch up the bottom with a dremel, then blacken on top. So cost here could be minimal, if your nephew has the stones to chop a piece off a perfectly functional gun!0 -
Had the same thing. Just sawed off the triangle front sight, filed and polished to the found part on the gas block, and used cold blue. The targets and pests can't tell it was changed. 0 -
He did go back to the shop that sold it...they agreed to give him his money back, order him what he wanted, and they would call him when in came in. That did not sound like a good idea to him ("bird in the hand I think").
He said he could not believe someone else (besides me) said "cut it off" , but he said he was going to do it, and order a new gas block with the rail on top....probably the best solution.
HOWEVER - when he asked when we could do it, I said "What's this 'we' crap...you said my idea was too crude."

From the gun store's perspective, this is easy.
Since we're living in Obama-panic 2, the re-stocked gun will probably fly right back off the shelf (possibly for even more than what he paid for it), and the gun store will get to hold his money indefinitely until a new gun comes in (probably at LOWER cost to them then this one).

Lots of people DO cut these off. . .honest. . .I didn't just "make this up".
But really, no need to do BOTH things. If he's going to swap out the gas block anyway for one with a rail on it, there is no need to molest the current one. (IMO that's the most versatile and "best" answer). If going with an optic-only setup and doesn't want to install folding "backup" iron sights, then he doesn't really need to put a gas-block with rail in place.
On doing the swap, its not "brain surgery" and it can be done at home, but it does require a few specialized tools including a front sight barrel block to hold everything in place without munging it up while knocking out the gas block pin. Unless he plans on doing this swap more than once, it will probably cost less (let alone reduce chance of error) to pay a gunsmith who already has the experience and tools what "should" be a relatively small amount to do it for him.
