Wood Stocks Finish

Your stocks are probably birch, possibly beach. Look for a citrus stripper that is water based / cleanup to strip the finish from the stocks.

Some birch will end up "blotchy" or muddy with an oil stain, it is possible that an alcohol or laquer based stain will result in more of an even look.

Top coat is your choice, be an oil finish that is in the wood or urethane that is on top of the wood. I prefer an oil finish myself, tung oil or tru oil works for me.
