Volquartsen in 17 HMR

Volquartsen is the only company that makes a semiauto in 17 HMR. It is pricey. The question is, have they beat the problem that all the other manufacturers were having with the HMR in a semiauto? Or do they have the same problem with blowing cases, you just pay more for it?

    My understanding of the "problem", is that it was traced to barrel fouling that caused excessive pressures.

    My WAG if you don't keep the Volquartsen's barrel clean, and/or don't use the correct ammo that Volquartsen recommends. You're going to have the same problem.

    EDIT #1, In my personal experience, all ammo isn't created equal. Some manufacturers use a better quality jacket material, that won't degrade and foul the bore as other ammo will. The rifling, twist and bore quality have a lot to do with this also.

    Contact Volquartsen, for his input on what ammo he recommends. I'm sure with all the problems that semi-auto firearms chambered for the 17 HMR have had over the years. He will be quite familiar with the problem.

    I am with rufe, on this one. The tiny 17's are notorious for fouling problems, effecting accuracy, and pressure. It is usually around 20 rounds down the tube, that the accuracy starts falling off, depending on the cartridge case capacity. This problem does not go away going from semi-auto, to bolt, or to lever(some of the Henry Golden Boy's have blown a chunk right out of the receiver), or single shots.

    Volquartsen's products are top notch, but, they still need to be cleaned, to stay away from premature opening.

    Basically, what the skinny was, is Big Green rushed into making a 17HMR Semi-Auto. They did not properly test it they way they should, and had some bad things happen. Then they blamed the ammunition, including their own, and others, in which Steve Hornady, rebuked on the Hornady website. The only semi auto I heard of, that had any problems was Remington's. As for the Henry's. I know the recievers have pot metal in them, and am sure that this played into them grenading also.

    I thought it was the ammo all along.thats all I heard. I know rem pulled there's a lot of places. Now if pressure was the problem all along I keeping my rem 597. 17hmr and keep it even cleaner and keep shooting it. I really enjoy shooting it great for prairie rats.tanx guys for info.

    I called Volquartsen. Their recommended ammo is Winchester. They say the head of the case has a little thicker brass and is therefore a little tougher.

    I shoot Eley Match and Remington with out a problem.I clean after 10-shots, and Use a Weighted Bolt handle.
