Mauser 22 trainer - scope mount ?

Anyone else think the scope mounts are backwards?

I'm thinking that the quick release levers need to be on the left side.

I don't ever recall seeing one with a dovetailed receiver, fitted with a very high scope like that before. Generally the manufacturers name is marked on the forward portion of the receiver,just over the chamber, where it is now dovetailed.

It doesn't appear to be factory original to me.

I don't think that is a k98. The trainer k98 from the early years used a safety on the end of the bolt just like it's big brother. I think it is a later model .22lr that is "made" to look like a k98. The few ones I've seen do have the makers mark above the chamber.

Here is a brand new one....

I have an Erma trainer. Bolt looks and functions like big brother only smaller. No scope provisions on mine. Has front sight protector but missing cleaning rod, too bad some jerk scratched his name in it. Good shooter, never jams even with the crappy production ammo of the past. Heavy.

Looking at the way the trigger sets in the trigger guard, I'm guessing this is a nonoriginal. I have a Mauser 22target rifle that is a GI prize from WW2. It has dovetails on top of the reciver for the factory cantilevered peep sight. An air gun scope mount will snug up on this dovetail but a standard tip off mount won't.
It has a military type safety on the bolt.
