S&W model 64-1
Anyone tell me the date of birth of a S&W model 64-1 38 special serial # 101573 and also how can I tell if my S&W model 10 and this model 64 will handle the +P ammunition. Any info is appreciated. Terrill

They will handle it but why, a good 38 Special load is enough, want 357 performance, then get one. 0 -
Some M10 revolvers were actually chambered in .357 magnum.
But, +P rounds are only slightly more powerful than standard .38 specials.

Your model 64-1 was probably manufactured in 1972, unless it has a heavey barrel, then any where from 73 to 1977.

It has the heavy barrel so I can figure from 73 to 77 DOM. The +P question was more out of curiosity than a want to use this ammo but my questions were answered perfectly & good logic for others who have read this thread a thanks to all for the info.

Any K frame Smith and Wesson in serviceable condition will handle all the +P ammo you care to shoot just fine, including the model 10 and model 64.
The reason you want the "+P" ammo is not because at best its slightly more powerful than fully loaded "ordinary" .38s (it is, though only by 10% or so).
The best reason to use +P ammo for defense is because the best defensive "personal protection" loads (as opposed to target or practice loads) are typically only available in +P. If you want the best defensive BULLETS, you'll want +P.0 -

BTW - 101573 is not the serial number of that pistol. If you got if off the frame by the cylinder crane, it's most likely an assembly number.
For all Smith & Wesson revolvers, the serial number is on the bottom of the butt. Some have serial numbers in the crane area of the frame, but many do not.
Based upon the time frame of your pistol, there should be a "K" somewhere in the serial number. If you provide us with the serial number we can tell you the year it was made.

In that case it was made in 1976.0
