257 Weatherby Brass
Can 257 Weatherby brass be made by using any other Weatherby brass - necking down or up? The 270 WM looks like it would work, but the easier to get 300 WM too long & off dimension.

The 257 is the same length as the 270 & 7mm Wby Mags, so all that's needed is to resize. It could also be made from 300 & 340 Wby Mags, but the brass would need to be shortened. I standardize on Winchester brass where possible, so my preference is to run 264 win Mag brass through the 257 sizer die, which makes 257 Wby brass with just a little bit narrower body near the shoulder, which forms out on the first firing. The Winchester brass is cheaper and better for my purposes because it has similar performance characteristics to the other cartridges using win brass. 0 -
You can even make it out of 7mm rem mag brass, it will just be a tad short.
I would use Virgin brass.0 -
Not much to be gained by reforming already expensive (other caliber) WBY brass. I've made several hundred .257 Wby brass from 264 Win mag. Simple logic for this: I don't have a 264 nor expect to have one so there's NO chance of shoving reformed case ammo into the wrong chamber. The 264 WM brass reformed easily coming out just a little(0.1" IIRC)short after evening up the mouths but the original Wby necks are long anyway. The only time this will be an issue is a combination of very short boattail bullet and long free bore. Fireforming with a moderate load is required. I actually hunted with the fireform loads the first year. I have no problems with 100 grain boattails in my Vanguard but haven't tried any of the 85 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips I have on the shelf(not really a bullet I desire in the Wby anyway).
Be advised that other brand brass may be harder than Wby(Norma) brass and requires some careful loading.0 -
Thank you all very much, this is great info. I hadn't thought of using the 264 to form from - that works great for me. I have a few hundred 7mm Rem Mag cases laying about, but they're all once fired or more - have a Rem 700 Police.
I'm using the 257 WM in a Thompson Center TCR 83. Single shot takedown rifle. Doesn't have the same extraction capabilities as a bolt rifle so I'll load a bit on the light side so things don't get sticky.0
