Ruger No 3 - Scope Question
I just picked up a Ruger No 3 in 223 and have a few questions regarding scope mounting.
I see Ruger style scope ring bases are available from Brownells but they are out of stock - does Ruger sell these anymore, or does out of stock really mean "gone forever"? If they can be gotten, which # Ruger scope rings should I use if using the Ruger style base?
I see different numbered Weaver 2 piece bases are listed in Brownells and Midway - can anyone verify which # Weaver bases (front & back) are used? Is there a conventional turn in base offered, either 2 or 1 piece style?

The new weaver catalog shows #'s 85 and 86 for the #3. 0 -
On four of the No. 3's that I have scoped, I have four different base/ring systems. The Ruger system is great if you can find it. I don't think Ruger makes it now. I don't know the ring numbers; It's been too many years. This is what I have on my 223. Redfield made a 2 piece turn-in style base set with adjustable rear base. On the box is number 512032, also SR#3, and labeled Ruger #3 Carbine. I bought my set new-in-box off an auction site for $20. The Weaver style base/ring set came on my 30/40 Krag. Front base #86 and #85 rear. However my favorite base/ring set for a No. 3 is the one made by Conetrol. Expensive, but beautiful and well made. It's the one I have on the 22 Hornet. Besides auction sites, old gun and hardware stores are good places to find vintage bases. 0 -
Thanks for the info, I'm finding with the Weaver #85 and #86 that Weaver "suggests" shimming may be required and some "fitting" of the front base. Brownells lists #79 and #86 and a "503/504m set".
Does the #85 & #86 fit without any fiddling about?
I figure I'll be hitting the auction sites for the other versions.0 -

I have - they look very nice. The Weaver with Warne low mounts will work fine, but I'll definitely poke around the web for something nicer looking.
This is my 1st No3 (I have 3 No1 and 1 No3) and although I bought it as a plinker rather than serious target work I'd like it to shoot well. I assume the hammer is the same as the No1 and will add a Moulds to help a bit.0
