How accurate are smooth bore shotgun slug barrels? What is their maximum range?

I have a Remington 870 in a .12 gauge and .20 gauge. Do slug barrels have to be made to fit shotguns or can I use any slug barrels on these shotguns? Can shot shells be fired through a slug barrel? 0 -
I shoot brennekes out of a remington 1100 skeet barrel. It will hold 3 inches at 75 yd easy close to that at 100 0 -
i could hit a papper plate with the one on my 870 at 50 yards but no grouping but i may add the barrel only had a front bead sight.
i put on a hastings full riffled slug barrel with a 4 power scope and then i could shoot 1 inch groups out to 150 yards0 -
Paper Plate at 50 is pretty good standing. I have seen and made a few longer than 100 but I wouldn't recommend it. 75 yards would be ideal. 0 -
Smoothbore shotguns with foster style slugs are usually adequate for deer out to 75+ yards. 100 to 125 yard shots are sometimes accomplished with the better shooting rigs with scopes. 0 -
I have been hunting deer with smooth bore shotguns for 40yrs and they have served me well. Buy a 5 pack of Rem, Win, Fed, and Brenneke slugs and see how they group at 50 yds. If you get a brand that groups good then figure how to put a scope on the gun and limit your hunting shots to 100 yds or less. I prefer a 2,3, or a 4x scope. 0 -
I run the 12 gauge Lyman cast sabot slug in a 20 inch smoothbore handheld 870 equipped with a screw in choke tube marked skeet #2. Will own 3 pound coffee cans at 90 yards. Has a mid bead to provide 2 aiming points. 0 -
It's going to depend on Your individual shotgun.
Try several brands/types of slugs to see which, if any, give acceptable accuracy.0 -
We used BRI type sabot slugs in smoothbore Benelli M-1 Super 90's and they would stay in the "bottle" on a B-27 target at 100 yards with the rifle type sights that came stock on the guns. 0 -
I have sen, Remington 870, and Mossberg 500 smoothbore slug guns, that could hold 3-5 inch groups at 100 yards. Some accurate enough to hit a 12 oz. soda/beer can at that range 8 out of 10 times. This is using the regular Foster type rifled slugs. As any barrel that will ultimately impart spin to the projectile, they must be kept clean. That means getting all of the lead deposits out, when the accuracy starts to drop off.
That said, I have seen some that "wouldn't shoot well", but after a good cleaning, they would be good for Minute Of Deer/Hog at 100 yards, maybe 125 yards.
