1885 low wall ??, Bert...now w/pix oops wrong ser.
I purchase this at the Reno gun show (talked to Mr. Shennum briefly & bought your book)I asked about you & he said you "were under water". anyway Win. M1885 l.w., ser, # 8906 8905, 28" oct. barrel marked 44 wcf, cresent butt plate. the barrel has been refinished but the receiver ?? bore is very good. I bought this as more of a 'shooter', but do you have any info on it? thanks

In regards to Model 1885 low-wall serial number 8906, it is listed as follows;
Received in Warehouse: March 11th, 1887
Type: Rifle
Caliber: 32 Long (rimfire)
Barrel: 26" No. 1 octagon
Trigger: Plain
Sights: None listed
Apparently it has been rebarreled, but at least is a very good caliber. It should make for a real nice shooter.0 -

The serial number on that rifle is not original. The pictures show that it is a Third variation Model 87 Winder Musket receiver frame, and that the lower tang is not original to the frame. Based on the flaking bluing, it was a very late production (1920) Winder Musket. Is it ordnance marked behind the hammer?
The four screws on the right hand side of the receiver frame (with filler screws in them) were for the Lyman No. 53 receiver peep sight that was used on all of the Third variation Winder Muskets.0 -

The good news is that you have the strongest of all the various low-wall receiver frames that Winchester made. In fact, your low-wall is actually a milled down high-wall. It has a thicker frame, and the tangs are much beefier that the typical low-wall. It should make a very fine shooter.0 -

Bert,Mike, Don't mean to hijack this thread but I just bought an 85 with ser # 8838, close to this one. Mine has the script ser # and the patent date on the lower tang. High wall, thin side, set trigger, 3x wood, pistol grip, checkered, some pressure dents etc. hooded front target peep site standard rear site and a veneer peep tang site, 38-55. finish--- case color rec. 85% just fading a bit. very close to hidden areas. barrel finish 70%, bore 8-9. made 1887. Your high-wall is correct, and it will letter properly. The script style (and more lightly stamped) serial number is correct. Winchester did not begin using the block style font for the serial numbers until early 1910 (in the 109425 serial number range).0
