Help ID S&W I was given.
6 in barrel, 38Spl. On the frame under the crane are three lines of data, line 1 is a W, Line 2 says 576 20, line 3 is a 6. 576 20 is on the crane, too. Serial # K 222XXXX on butt.

The serial number on the butt is bogus. The various "K" frame 38's made between 1946 & 1957 had a maximum of 6 numbers after the "K".
If yours has 7,somebody has added a number to made the serial number spurious/phoney. Perhaps that's the reason it was given to you?
Unfortunately this isn't a uncommon occurrence. The serial numbers location on the butt, makes it all full easy for unscrupulous folks to attempt to alter it.0 -

Prior to 1957 when S & W identified their revolvers with model numbers, it was known as the Military & Police.0 -

You didn't mention the adjustable sight! It's a K 38, Target Masterpiece.0 -
K-38 Masterpiece. This one has the standard trigger and hammer. It looks to have at least the fourth screw - in front of trigger guard, if there is one on the top corner of the right side-plate just below the rear sight it is a "five-screw". These were good target revolvers and rode many an officer's holster in the revolver days of law enforcement. 0 -
That nails it down guys. It's a 5 screw K38 Masterpiece. It has a wonderful trigger.

I have both, the K22 & K38 Masterpiece, one of the big selling points back in the day was, that they both weighed the same loaded.
I have an old Smith ad around here some where that talks about practiceing with the cheaper to shoot 22, same sights, same weight.
In todays world, it's a model 14.
Shoot and enjoy it, you'll not buy anything today that compares.

That's the gun LAPD issued for years and of course Reed & Malloy carried on the Adam 12 TV series. I carried one for about 4 years. One of the most accurate revolvers ever made. 0 -
I have that same gun made in 1952. They are fantastic guns. Love the "fishook" aka spped hammer. While yours is a Pre Model 14 K38 be aware not all K38's are considered Target Masterpiece (according to folks on the S&W forum meaning collectors and not me). To them a Masterpiece K38 has target stocks and a wide target hammer and not the magna stocks & speed hammer. 0
