it's a K98 WW2 German Mauser with a cut down military stock, 8mm x 57 0 -

You show a German 1898 Mauser made in 1939.
Either a war trophy bringback or postwar surplus.
Caliber probably remains 8mm Mauser (8x57, 7.92x57).
It has been roughly sporterized by cutting back the stock and discarding barrel bands, bayonet lug and rear sight.
It has been drilled and tapped for Weaver scope bases, looks like a Buehler scope safety installed. I trust the bolt handle was bent to clear a scope.
The manufacturer's code is probably under the front scope base.
It doesn't matter much, the gun has been altered so much as to wipe out any collector value. Just have to hope it shoots well.0 -
Yeah, it's a 1939 Mauser, the code under the sight base will be byf. The 655 Waffenamt and double aa suffix in the serno are giveaways.
Too bad it's ruined. I had a '39 very similar. They are nicely marked rifles made during peacetime.0 -

I usually pull them apart and part them out. Lots of people like the actions to build a custom rifel. I get 200.00 for a complete action. The stock is pretty much firewood and the barrel if the bore is excellent and not altered might bring a little but not much. many of the bores are not good and many have been rechambered to 8mm/06 and not marked so be carefull. 0 -
Don't feel too bad. It was common practice in the 1950's & 60's to sporterize WW-2 Milsurps. They were common,cheap and generally good shooters. My father also a WW-2 bringback Mauser. Bought it from the guy who brought it back (a friend of his). But he completely restocked it. And THREW THE ORIGINAL STOCK SET AWAY! 0
