S&W M&P 22 magazines
After purchasing one of these 22 semi-autos I found only one ten round magazine in the box. I didn't realize S&W was so stingy. At any rate I have now found that the only thing scarcer than 22 ammo is the 12 round magazine for this weapon. Without paying three times the price for one does anyone have a source?

From what I know, I do not think it was S&W that was being stingy. I think it was either the distributor, or dealer, knowing what lies ahead.

Its not uncommon for unscrupulous sellers to "steal" a spare magazine from the retail package and then keep it for separate sale or personal use. This has been happening quite a bit longer than the recent Obama gun panic, though I'm sure that hasn't helped.
Anyway, I'm not sure if this particular gun is supposed to come with a spare mag or not. I can't seem to find reference to one on the Smith website. Perhaps contact their customer service (which is pretty good) and ask them if it is.
If they tell you the gun IS supposed to come with a spare mag, you might go back to the dealer and ask them if they've accidentally "misplaced" it, so you don't have to contact Smith and tell them about the "problem". That might be incentive enough for the dealer to "find" the missing magazine, assuming they don't want grief from Smith.0 -
The M&P 22 comes with one magazine. At first only California had the 10 rounder all other states got the 12, I don't know if thats still the case or not. 0 -
Back in January RSR had both the 10 rd and 12 rd ones available quite often. 12 rd mags, not so much. 0 -
It annoys the heck out of me that some gun manufacturers only provide one magazine with their firearm. The manufacturer probably buys these mags by the gross and pay next to nothing for them, every firearm sold should come with at least two magazines. Kimber charges over $1200 for alot of their pistols and provides only one mag. I know they only pay three or four dollars per mag when they buy them, would it bankrupt them to put a second mag in with the gun?
Ruger, Glock, Springfield and a few other gun makers still provide two mags (Glock, sometimes three mags) with their pistols.0 -

I also just confirmed that these only ship out with one 12 round magazine (or a 10-rounder in the States that require limited capacity magazines).
In fairness, because of the rimmed cartridge design .22 magazines are a little harder to manufacture than typical centerfire magazines, so they probably actually do cost the manufacturer more than $5 each to purchase, but I agree in principle here.
In my opinion, every semi-auto pistol should come with two magazines. I also think Smith, in particular, made record earnings last year; no it wouldn't kill them to include another $10 magazine with a $400 retail gun.
I guess they've decided that not including an extra doesn't erode their sales, and/or that they'd rather sell you the extra separately at retail directly, if you want one (not everyone does).
To me, the big problem here is that with most of these specialized .22s, the manufacturer is the only one selling spare magazines. I don't necessarily mind paying for a spare magazine, but I sure as hell don't want to pay $70 for one for $400 gun (which, apparently, IS the actual going internet price for these right now).
In this particular case, Smith will sell you a new 12 or 10 round magazine directly for $32+ shipping, though they're out of stock. My experience with them is that they will backorder stuff for you, so you can buy one, and then whenever they restock, they'll ship it. It may take months, but if you're in no rush its probably worth the wait.0 -
I was lucky to pick up 2 extra 12 round mags a couple of months ago for $60 delivered. Glad I did it. The gun is great to shoot and cycles flawlessly so far. I think my wife wants it

Pretty simple boys they want you to spend more money on their products. They know you cant get by with only one so you gotta get another.. Capitalism at its finest. More and more manufacturers are doing this now.. 0 -
If my experience with Kimbers are any indication, one of their magazines is one too many. Although my 1911's are 10mm, the Colt, Dan Wesson, and aftermarket work in all my guns, but my Kimber mag would only rarely feed a full mag, including being shot from either of the two kimbers I had at the time.

Look around a bunch has been dumped on the market for around 30 bucks but you have to look.[:D] 0 -

It came with on and now I have 40
