Phoenix Arms .22
I'm looking for a decent little .22 for a pocket/pack gun. Does anyone have any experience with the Phoenix .22? Are they reliable and durable? Thanks for your time.

The few that I saw come thru our indoor pistol range were problematic and jammed often. There are much better choices on the market for a small 22. Have you looked at the Beretta 21A? 0 -
They are great guns for the money. You will have to shoot a lot of different ammo thru it to find out what it likes.
This is my "throw it in the glovebox, stick it in the coveralls pocket"
gun. They are heavy for the size, but so is a M1A1 tank.
That's what I like about it for rough usage. I may clean it this summer, whether it needs it or not!![;)][:D]

Thanks for the input. Ive had a Taurus PT-22 and Beretta in the past and neither of them gave me problems. Im just looking at choices right now. 0 -

Ever consider a revolver?
for a pocket 22, Ruger makes their LCR in an 8-shot version.
It's quite handy.0 -
Mine jams 2 or 3 times with every mag of 10rds---when I put Thunderbolts,
CCI std velocity, or just about any bulk ammo in it.
Runs fine with Remington yellowjackets.
All you that called them Jamamatics, have you tried different ammo, and I mean more than just 3 or 4 types????
It IS one of the more ammo sensitive small autos out there.
It will keep all 10 shots on a 6" paper plate at 7 yards. That is my standard pocket pistol requirement.0 -
Never actually shot one myself, but I've seen one malfunction repeatedly.

While some guns are more picky than others, most of the .22s out there will run fine with a variety of ammo types, and almost all of them will run 40 grain solid standard or high velocity bullets fine.
If a gun will really only run right with one type of .22 ammo, particularly an obscure or expensive type, to me that's a pretty significant drawback, ESPECIALLY in times like now, when finding ANY .22 ammo at all can be a bit challenging.
Now, that said, many of the "ammo picky" .22s turn out to be quite a bit less so once properly cleaned, lubed, shot-in with a full brick (500 rounds) of ammo, then cleaned again. That probably applies here.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable standard for defensive use, though I think its a pretty low bar in absolute terms.
While I've known plenty of SHOOTERS who couldn't do it, I don't think I've ever seen a single action pistol that couldn't meet that standard.
Obviously, nobody is expecting match-quality from something like this, but still, if this gun isn't capable of quite a bit better than that, bluntly, I'd be disappointed.
Most .22s I've shot can do sub 2" groups at 7 yards, assuming I do my part. Limiting factor on these tiny .22s is usually quality of the sights (or lack thereof), not intrinsic accuracy of the gun itself.0 -

They hold the same genetic heritage as the Jennings J-22(or JUNK-22). Do not trust them, for being reliable, or accurate, enough to save your life. If you are looking for a noise maker, that will go bang, most of the time you want it to, then it might be what you are looking for.
I would suggest something like a Ruger Bearcat, Ruger SCR22, or an S&W 317 for a light, accurate, and reliable 22 that can be packed well...notice they are all revolver's?

I'll say two things about .22 revolvers that provides a significant real world advantage of those compared to just about EVERY small .22 auto:
a. They come out of the box completely reliable. . .
b. With EVERY type of ammunition.
Unfortunately, something like a Smith 317 will run you about $400, making it 4x as expensive as the Phoenix. On the other hand, the gun will actually LAST about 40x as long, so if you intend to shoot the gun a lot and can afford the upfront cost, its probably worth it.0
