5.56 ammo
I am soon to load some 556 with 77 grain BTHP that do not have cannalure((sp). Can I crimp or not? These are to be shot in a 1/8 AR 15. Pressure and bullet set-back are my reason for wanting to crimp.

Yesterday I found some Russin made 223/5.56 ammo for 9.99 which is a lot cheaper than I have found lately. I do not know anything about this amm but I bought 100 rds anyway. It is called Brown Bear 55gr. bimetal HP boat tail with a laquered steel case and non-corrosive berdan primer. Any one know anything about this ammo? What is laquered steel? I plan on shooting it from my Colt M4 as backup ammo if I run out of what I already have.

Lacquered Steel, is steel coated with paint for all practical purposes.
Lot of this type of ammo has been imported from Russia in the last 10 years.
The primers have a reputation for not being as sensitive as US made commercial primers.
Also if you do a lot of shooting and the barrel/chamber gets hot. There is possibility for the melted lacquer from the fired cases, building up in the chamber and causing problems. Clean the chamber very rigorously with a chamber brush and solvent, after shooting this stuff.0 -
excellant ammo! have litterally fired thousands of rds through all my guns including m16 and NEVER have had one stick in the chamber or not go bang. 0 -

-Ammo is made in Russia, by the Barnaul factory, which is a big ammo producer. If you're familiar with "Wolf" Russian steel case ammo, this is basically the same thing, though some think its a little bit better. I've shot a bunch of this (mostly 7.62x39, though also some 5.56) and never had any kind of issues.
-Lacquered steel is just want it sounds like. . .soft steel cases covered in a thin film of lacquer to help prevent case corrosion.
Typically most modern steel case ammo is coated this way, though some of the brands are using a polymer based (ie plastic) coating instead of lacquer to reduce concerns that the lacquer will melt and cause case sticking.
