Colt single Action grips

How can you tell if grips are original for a 1st generation colt. I just purchased a late teens gun that has original looking bakelight or plastic grips. They seem to fit well all over except at the bottom of the front strap. They are above the metsl there and feels odd. Right where your little finger comes around the strap at the lower part they are higher

  Lots of repro made and lots of minor changes as the years go from start to finish on First Gen Pistols they are a study within themselves On top of that a set of grips on one pistol may be vastly different then the next pistol OFF THE LINE because no two grip frames are the same size. Many original grips had part of the serial Number of pistol scratched on the inside of the grip. of course anyone can scratch a few numbers. The locating hole should be Exactly the size of the pin . not enlarged to make for a better fit.

  The best way to tell is the inside detail; very few reproductions get it right. If you can post a good picture of the inside that will help determine if they are original 1st Generation stocks, but if they are original to the single action they should be a near perfect fit.

  Original grips are always fitted at the factory by installing the grips & polishing the grips (& frame) to get a perfect fit. Then, due to the abrasive used in polishing, the frame must be finished (blued or plated).
  
  Your grips may be original for A 1st gen Colt SAA; they are not original for YOUR 1st gen Colt SAA (unless your gun has been refinished outside of the Colt factory).
