S&W 629 pinned & recessed

Again Iam asking knowledgeable Smith collectors to give thier opinions.
I currently have 3 N frame Smiths:2-4in.and a 6in.
All are P&R.
I would like to buy an 8 3/8in.44mag N frame as a hunter as well as a collector piece.
I had been looking at model 29s believing the 29-2 or earlier ones were the only P&R Smiths in this caliber.(I only have an interest in N frames with P&R features).
I have recently learned that the 1st 629s were P&R.
A stainless gun makes good sense as a hunter over a nice blued 29.
It seems the 8 3/8inchers were the fewest of the P&R 629s made.
These 629 types are now over 40yrs old.
How valued are they as collectors?
What would the approx.value be for a mint 8 3/8in?
I recently passed on buying one priced firmly at $925.
Starting to wish I had bought it.

    I have a 629-2 that 'isn't p.&r.. just to note; it came with a 8 3/8" barrel...I changed it to 6"- much 'handyer' for hunting.

    From what I can tell the only ones that are P&R are the 629 no dash guns.

    I hated my 629 6" so bad I gave it away. On the other hand one of my 10 5/8 29's has 30,000 + full tilt rounds. Not much harder to carry but the 1 gallon milk jugs at 200 meters can tell the difference.

    Yes, passing on the one in a previous post of yours, was not in your best interest. They come up, very far and few between. The 27's, and 27-2, are always out there, it seems.

    If you are looking for something to hunt with, and plan on running a lot of very hot loads thru it, then the 29, or 629, might not be the gun for you. I have sent several back to the factory to be tightened up, after having a steady diet of hot loads. Almost like the S&W 19/66 model. It will handle hot magnums, but they should be used sparingly.

    For hunting, I would look to the Ruger Redhawk/Super Redhawk. Much more beef, and come in models that can be somewhat easily scoped. I have a 7 1/2" RedHawk in 41 Magnum, with a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x, on it, and there is almost a fight every evening, to see who is going to takt it out on evening watch...Much like a Browning A-Bolt super short action, I rebarreled to 6.5 Heaton(similar to 6.5 WSSM).

    I believe the second one down from the top, is a 629-1, that is an early transition model, that is pinned, but not recessed.

    The 629 was introduced in 1979, 1981 was the first year the 4" and 8-3/8" barrels where available. The 629-1 was introduced in 1982 and was not pinned or recessed.

    As stated before ( I think this subject has several reposts ) ?
    I have a 4" P&R in the wood display box !
    It will rate 99.9% Plus !!!
    I was told that less than one thousand ( 1000 ) 4" p&r 629s left the factory ?
    and was told that mine was a 1979 ???
    Who knows , I dont remember the dae when I looked mine up in my references ?
