Added Holes in 1897 Riot Shotgun w/Pics

OK, why would someone put two holes in the top of a Winchester 1897
Riot Shotgun (Made 1900)? They appear to be random drilled but I don't want to fill them if they were used for some valid purpose. Any ideas?

  The big hole looks like a stripped out hole from a wood screw sling stud, the little one looks like an intact sling stud hole.

  Maybe they rigged up some type of shoulder sling.
