Mounting Scope on Savage 24J
Just acquired a 24J (22LR over 20 gauge) and want to mount a scope. It has grooves on the top of the rifle barrel and it appeared that standard 22 rings for grooved receivers would work. However, the "arch" of the barrel is too high to allow the rings to tighten at least on the two sets (Traditions and an unknown maker's set)I have at hand. There may be enough metal between the bottom of the base and the through bolt for tightening to allow filing more of an arch in the rings. Before I do that though I thought I'd ask if anyone knew of rings that were made for the Savage 24 which would fit without filing. . .or other workable solutions? Thanks.
Edit: perry shooter, yes, and the warning not to fire the shotgun barrel with a scope in place is on the receiver. I wouldn't mount a scope except that I can't see the sights well enough to be very effective with them.
Edit 2: MIKE WHISKEY, darn, once again I overlooked the obvious and likely best answer. Might try the file approach on the 22 rings anyway unless someone comes up with a better idea.

Be careful the grooves arenot the types of mounting system that will be safe to use with the shotgun barrel 0 -

Get You a Rail that will slide throuigh those Groves, then drill and Tap Four holes, then Loc-Tight the screws, Mount Your 1 X 4 Scope and enjoy it.
I have Scopes Mounted on 12-ga.-3" Shot guns with-out any problems.

Tip off mounts are not all that strong. Perhaps you could use 3 or 4 instead of the normal two. Fitting them would help, so could some epoxy. I would look into making a split aluminum block that trapped the 22 bbl, ignoring the groves completely.
added I think Tflogger solution looks good, lots of contact area along the grove.0 -
On the Valmet ones, the Shotgun is over the rifle so that you have plenty of metal to mount optics on.
The nicest one I ever saw was a 12ga/.308. Perfect survival rifle.0 -
Thanks TFlogger, I've ordered one. Not sure there is enough "arch" for the 24J but if not I'll file to fit or use the mount on another 22. Looks like a good solution. And thanks to all for comments. 0
