This is a Springfield 18c stock. Is the coating paint?

  I think it's varnish.

  I believe its true oil and yrs of use.

  I am thinking a varnish with stain mixed in it. Usualy this would have been on a hardwood stock to make it look like walnut.

  It's called 'varnish stain'. Most of the hardware or building material stores carry one brand or another.
