scope base height for barrel mounted system
All, I have purchased a winchester 1895 with factory bases. The front base is a bit taller than the back. I suppose so the target scope would set parallel with the bore. I want to put an extended eye relief scope on the rifle using existing holes drilled for the 3/8" bases. The bases are too far apart to mount a scope now. I'd like to use a two piece set up that would allow me to mount an eer scope with release rings so I can also use the Sheard three leaf sight. Maybe take a picatinny rail and machine it so it won't be in the way of the sight? Any ideas?

Can't help with the mounting other then suggesting that the rifle is more likely a 1885 Winchester, rather then a 1895.
As long as the barrel has already been drilled, take it to a competent gunsmith for the additional holes to be drilled. Brownells sells all kinds of mounts some even undrilled/blank. If the gunsmith knows his stuff he can drill the mount to fit the tapped holes in the barrel.
As far as the EER scope is concerned be sure and get one with the heaviest most visible reticule possible. Couple of years ago I bought a handgun scope with standard crosshair type reticule. I just through my money away. Standard crosshairs are to tough to see mounted out on the barrel.0 -

Sorry! Didn't mean to doubt you. Because the 95 loads and ejects from the top. A top mounted "target" scope is quite uncommon.
My other remarks are still valid, I feel though. Regarding the competent gunsmith, and pistol scope with thick post reticules.0
