Scope for a 338
My dad the cheap ass wants to put a Nikon Prostaff on a Remington 700 338 WM that he bought. I'm a fan of Nikon in fact I have 3 of them but I didn't know how well the Prostaff would hold up to the recoil of that big boy. Being retired, he doesn't want to spend a bunch of money.

Scrap the Nikon, and go to Burris FullField II. Nikon's warranty SUCKS. You better have all your "T"'s crossed, and "I"'s dotted, and be holding your breath just right.
Burris...cry once, not twice.

I can't possibly test every scope and variation of scopes on every rifles made but you can do some reading and searching out of information regarding specific scopes. That's what I just did.
The Prostaff comes out with a huge majority of positive reviews by current owners. However, I did not find any using it on a .338 Win. Mag rifle.
This doesn't surprise me in the least since I can find dozens of positive reviews for some of the worst abominations of scopes ever made. People simple don't have the frame of reference for a proper comparison when it comes to spending money and getting the quality they need.
I'd let your Dad make the decision since it's his money in the first place. If the scope fails, you get the opportunity to tell him 'I told you so...' and then help him find a better replacement.
If it doesn't fail, he made a great decision and both of you should be happy.

Father's Day is right around the corner, is there some way you could "delay" his decision and surprise him with a quality scope?? Or, are you a "cheap ass" too?? [}:)]0 -
In response, all I will say is that he bought the gun out from under me and I wasn't happy about it so I'll be d****d if I'm outfitting it for him. 0 -
Sad. I'd give nearly anything if I could buy my dad a scope today and go shooting with him again. 0 -

You should relish the time you have with your father. My father and I were also competitive with each other. I lost him 20 years ago to cancer, from a brief 2 month illness. He was my best friend, and we talked EVERY day. He was 61, and missed retirement by 8 months. I still look for that dark red Woolrich hunting suit to come out of the woods every hunting season.
Hang in there, though. He will probably give you the rifle, after that cheap Nikon ProStaff, puts a knot, and cut between his eyes, from not having enough eye relief.

Make no mistake, dad and I have a wonderful relationship and he's my best friend. I was joking and I'd do anything I can for him but after buying him 3 guns in the last year, I'm not buying him a scope. For what I spent, he can go out and buy 2 VX-3's. 0 -
