    I have an old savage 99 that the barrel is shot out it's in 300 savage now needs new barrel thinking about getting barrel 22-250 is this a doable project

    Someone else will do better describing the process, but if you remove the forend you'll see a plug - looks like a press fit piece of sheet metal with a split head screw head in the center. You have to hold that while backing out the screw on the left front of the receiver (just ahead of the counter)then turn it to increase tension. I forget which way to turn it.

    The screw on the left side of the receiver has its threads just under the head. Unscrewing it backs the stem away from cuts in a wheel inside the receiver. After you've turned a bit reseat it.

    You can test which way to turn by turning it and checking tension on the ejector. I'd try clockwise first, but this is just a guess - been a long time since I did mine.
