Mossberg 500/Hew Haven 600 bolt variations I.D. ?
A friend gave me his old New Haven model 600AB 12 gauge pump shotgun to fix. It's missing the left side extractor and extractor spring, and also the ejector and ejector attaching screw. I can get all these parts online easily, but there's an issue with variations in the left side extractor. This gun apparently used a longer left side extractor, and the extractor retaining pin is set back further on the bolt on that side.
From what I can glean, this is the same type of shotgun as a Mossberg 500, who made it for New Haven.
I asked around and found out that the longer left side extractors are nonexistant today, no one even has a PICTURE of one, and people that stock Mossberg 500 parts have never even SEEN one. They recommend replacing the entire bolt with the newer type, with 2 equal length extractors.
Question- there are variations to these bolts that may cause one type of bolt, to not fit and close/lock in another gun.
What type of bolt will fit and work, and what associated parts ?
The gun is a "D" serial number prefix with 2 slide bars, made approximately 1969-70 by what I'm told. They went to 2 slide bars in 1970 correct ?

With anything regarding older Mossbergs, your best bet would be to contact Vic Havlin. He is the historian who wrote the history of the Mossberg Co. And is/was? the president of the Mossberg collectors association.
He is also a dealer who sells Mossberg parts. I have purchased parts from him in the past with good results.
Just GOOGLE his name or Mossberg Collectors Association, to get his contact information.
New Haven is actually a "Trade Name" used by Mossberg on their economy line of firearms. These guns were exactly the same as their regular production guns, "EXCEPT" unpolished finish, birch stocks, etc. The cosmetics and wood weren't held to same quality as their regular production guns, so that they could be sold at a cheaper price point.
If you can figure out when your New Haven shotgun was made? Parts from a standard model Mossberg shotgun from the same time frame, most likely will be interchangeable.0 -
I had already contacted Vic and another vendor, and did some online research, between them all, found out there are at least 3 different bolts, and 2 extractors. The early extractors were spring steel like on a bolt action Mossberg or model 500 in .410 gauge. These extractor in the pump 500 broke constantly, my local vendor has 3 bolts and the left side extractor is broken on all 3.
the fix is upgrade to the new style with the same hardened machined steel extractor on both sides
there are 2 styles of rocker lock, one is long, one short. 2 styles of firing pin, one without spring, one with spring. To upgrade any
older 500 to modern specs, the bolt, lock, and slide must be changed together, to guarantee the action will shut and lock0
