Beretta 92
How do I know which 92 I have so I know which parts I need. This is an older military model. side says "US 9mm M9-Beretta-65490 PB"
Other side is "Assy9346442-65490" I believe its a 92FS but want to make sure. Any disernable differances between them? Right now I have complete upper slide assy w/misc parts. Thanks for any help.

Is it possible to convert at Beretta 92 9mm to a 96 40 cal by simply swapping out the barrel and mainspring? Or do I need to do other modifications as well? 0 -
You need a complete .40 cal upper, not just the barrel, and complete uppers are hard to find and run close to $300.00 when you find one. Then you need to buy .40 cal magazines also. You can just buy a complete used .40 caliber Beretta 96 and have 2 guns, they aren't much more than just an upper and will come with .40 cal mags. 0 -

No, because (among other reasons) the breechface for 9mm is smaller than .40SW, and a .40 SW cartridge won't fit.

And as he says even when they're technically feasible, the cost of doing these conversions usually isn't worth it because the upper/slide assembly usually costs most of what an entire new gun costs.
As a sort of side note, interestingly, before there was a 40SW, Israeli Military industries invented a cartridge called the 41 action express. This was similar to a 40SW in terms of ballistics, but it used an interesting rebated rim cartridge that was designed on purpose to fit into a 9mm breech/extractor, so that you could convert a standard 9mm to this caliber with just a barrel/spring and magazine swap.
Unfortunately, the 41AE was a little ahead of its time and didn't catch on. So at this point is more of a historical curiosity than a viable caliber.0 -
While I am not exactly sure how the Beretta runs their extractor/breech face, or if the 40 caliber barrel is larger in OD than the 9mm, I do know that the Glock 9's will take 40 cal barrels, and magazines, and work with no problems. The Glock 40's will take 9mm barrels and magazines, and work the same way. Perhaps Beretta runs closer tolerences on their extractor/breech face.

You can definitely swap 40 caliber Glocks to run 9mm with the appropriate conversion barrel. What happens is the extractor holds the undersized 9mm in place onto the 40SW breech.
This isn't a "perfect" conversion since the 40SW extractor isn't optimized to extract 9mm cases, and you may give up a little bit in reliability, but its "good enough" for practice with cheaper low recoil 9mm ammo. So far as I know this will NOT work with a normal 9mm Glock barrel though.
Likewise, I'm pretty sure you can't just stick a 40 caliber Glock barrel into a 9mm slide. IIRC, a standard 40SW Glock barrel's outer diameter is too large to fit through the muzzle opening on the slide. The barrel won't even fit into the slide, let alone run properly.0 -

You don't need a conversion barrel to go from 40 to 9, I use my 17 and 34 barrels in my G22 all the time. You are correct that the outside diameter of 40 barrels are larger than the 9 barrels and 40 barrels won't fit into a 9mm slide, so a conversion barrel with the correct size diameter may be more accurate.
Also the breech face is smaller [but not much] in the 9 and a 40 cartridge won't fit. The extractors are so close to being the same that they can be interchanged and they will both work. The ejectors are also different but it still works! I've never changed my ejector or extractor when going from 40 to 9 and had no issues. One more point is that my 9 frames will not take 40 mags.
I guess you can go smaller but not larger is a good way to sum it up.0 -
