Butt plate-hard rubber or after mkt. plastic
How does one determine if a butt plate is an original or an aftermarket plastic?? I have one to sell and want to ID it correctly. It sez mod 72 on the back. Thanks.

Well what model gun is it for, have you searched GunBroker auctions for the same gun, do they have a plastic buttplate, how well does it fit, does it look like it was factory fitted, or is it poorly fitted and out-of-place? A picture would help a lot, also, you can take the plate off, and look at the stock. A lot of times the screw holes will not line up if the plate is a replacement, and the original holes will be filled with sections of dowel or other wooden objects, I guess the best I can say is it it looks original itprobably is, but help us out some, meet us halfway, post a pic or at the least a model and year made of said gun in question. 0 -
The butt plate is a Winchester part and was used on more models than just the model 72. 0 -
I only have the butt plate. No gun. The plate was found in a box of goodies at a gun show. I gave it a mild scratch test and my guess is that it's hard rubber. Thanks for the replies.quote:Originally posted by 317wc

I recently ordered a replacement buttplate from Brownells for a Model 61 Winchester.. It has Mod. 72 on the back.. Here's what Brownells says it fits..

Win. M61/67/69/72/1910 (4.75"x1.5") Rifle Buttplate
Mfr Part: B307

It's plastic, but that's obvious from the bright finish .. I use Krylon Matte artist spray to deaden the gloss on too shiny stuff.. Works well.. I buy mine at ACE Hardware, but most any Depot/Mart has it..

Great info ..... thanks Bob. [:D] I thought I had a real gem, but looks like it's not worth the effort trying to sell it. Photos, write up and all. 0
