ansch?tz 1418 mannlicher Schnabel

Hello,

I have a Anschutz 1418 Mannlicher .22LR. It has a black Schnabel at the fore end of the stock. I was told that it was bone or horn, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know what the Schnabel is made of. I'm refinishing the stock, and would like to know if Casey Tru-Oil could be applied to the Schnabel if it is bone or horn.

Any information is appreciated.

  Sometimes ebony is used also. Whatever the material is, I wouldn't put any Tru-Oil type of product on it.

  Hello, if you take the barrelled action out of the stock, you can heat up a nail or pin, anything metal, and touch it to the suspected bone/horn/ebony, and let it burn a small mark, and SMELL the smoke, bone/horn has a distinctly different smell than wood, and on the off chance the part is plastic, it will melt and you can smell that also.
  
  I can't really help you with the finish choice, I can say a lot of people like Tru-Oil, I would read up on everything you can find online about stock refinishing, also GOOGLE Linden and Biesen, these are well known stock makers, and maybe you can find some pertinent information to help you along, good luck, take your time, and good luck.

  For the most part, the factory rifles that have a black forend tip, are mostly Ebony, or plastic. I don't think the Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil will hurt either one.

  Thank you all for responding. At the end of the day it turned out to be horn. Tru-Oil did not work. Wax did the trick.
